How to change port number?

hi,

I registered a website at register.com. Now I want to redirect the domain name
to my box with apache running. But register.com only support changing the IP address binding to the URL. At the moment my apache could only be accessed by
:8080 . I cannot set that in register.com. How can I do this in apache?

cheers,

Wei

You will not be able to listen to ports < 1023 without gaining root
privileges. If you require one of those ports, an alternative would be
to speak with your system administrator about setting up a proxy or a
virtual host to your specifications. It is quite possible that your
system adminstrator already has a webserver running, or would be
willing to set one up.

Yes, there's nothing listening on the ports usually used for web
servers. Don't know why somebody suggested to run sockstat... We
already knew that apache isn't running on your host, didn't we? ;)

Okay, since you're not root, this will not work. Does it work if you
use Port 8080?

What do you mean with "sole user of an IP address"? Any given IP
address is almost always used by only one server (user).

the httpd.conf reads:

#Port: The port to which the standalone server listens. For
# ports < 1023, you will need httpd to be run as root initially.
#
#Port 8080
Port 80

Yes, I did say I was not root, but the sole user of an IP address.

Hm, where did you replace it? How does the relevant section of the
httpd.conf now look like? And didn't you just say that you're not root?

Well, yes, you can. As I just said...

Since I am not root, it seems that I cannot listen to any port<1023. Is there
any way that I could circumvent this?

You must either change your default port to be 80, which is what the
client browsers are going to try to contact, or listen on port 80 and
redirect all requests to port 8080. Or, you can specify the port in the
URL.

So, to allow users to specify http://your.domain.com, your browser must
answer on port 80 (and possibly redirect them to port 8080)

Or, your users can specify http://your.domain.com:8080 and use your
current configuration.

You cannot change the DNS binding to a specific port (at least not that
I'm aware of).

In your httpd.conf, you can set Port and Listen to any port number you
like.
