The directory structure of the project and it's subprojects is not very consistent. Different subprojects are organized differently and in seemingly ad-hoc ways which complicates the understanding of the structure and increased the complexity of files like .gitignore or the assembly descriptiors.

This is a parent issue that contains different subtasks.
