   Another cleanup I noticed while debugging origin failures.  The signal_timeout and t variables seem to serve no purpose.  The signal_timeout_at may still be relevant in the next timeout_at's get changed from the call to read_signal_and_update.  I assume there used to be more logic that used these variables.
