The bug might not be in the AbstractDOMTransformer itself as it only delegates
the SAX events to the DOMBuilder:

    public void characters(char c[], int start, int len)
            throws SAXException {
        builder.characters(c, start, len);
    }

Thanks for spotting and the testcase.
