[jira] [Commented] (HADOOP-13887) Support for client-side encryption in S3A file system

    [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-13887?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:comment-tabpanel&focusedCommentId=16156746#comment-16156746 ]

Steve Loughran commented on HADOOP-13887:

with s3guard in, its now possible to think about adding this to trunk

I've been looking a bit about get/set XAttr, in the context of distcp of HDFS encrypted data. There distcp forces -p for working with /.raw and does a getXAttr on the far end before scheduling any work. distcp assumes that if getXAttr works, so does setXAttr, so they both need to be supported. Unless we add XAttr to the builders, then tags are all there is here

I do actually think the idea of letting you at HTTP headers through getXAttr is actually quite nice, even if they can't be set; it makes the values public in the existing API.

> Expose the client-side encryption option documented in Amazon S3 documentation - http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/UsingClientSideEncryption.html
> Currently this is not exposed in Hadoop but it is exposed as an option in AWS Java SDK, which Hadoop currently includes. It should be trivial to propagate this as a parameter passed to the S3client used in S3AFileSystem.java
