INTSTALL.txt

Hello,

I have just unpacked cocoon 2.1.5.

I read INSTALL.txt and followed step (1) (obviously), (2) (it was
already done,

and then tried

./build.sh

but I get:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/tools/ant/launch/Launcher

This should not be necessary as the build.sh resets all these properties
like ANT_HOME and CLASSPATH:
http://cvs.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/cocoon-2.1/build.sh?rev=1.12&view=markup.
How can it happen that an installed Ant can jump in?

Well, removing the other ant jars (installed by tomcat-libs and
ant-core rpms) solved this problem, and the install now completes.
No doubt I'll have some more problems soon :-)

I had the same fault this morning with Fedora 2. I found that after
removing the Ant installed with Fedora 2 the problem was resolved.

I have seen mention about issues around two versions of Ant being a
problem with other Java projects.

Hmm... I did the same.

The diff between your instalation and mine is that mine is not a fresh
install I initially installed last year RH9, then upgraded to FC1 and
recently to FC2.

I also installed a fresh system with FC2, but I choosed to not install all
the java stuff in, because I prefered to install all manually since the
version on fedora are quite "outdated". BTW, there also Cocoon works.

I have another question. What version of Cocoon do you donwloaded, the
tar.gz or the zip version?

What you downloaded a rpm or just the zip version?

You don't need to create an endorsed lib in java. I think it is OK.

Looks like /etc/profile is getting called more than once. I can't
think why. Anyway, I scratched the PATH and ran /etc/profile again.

There is no such directory on my system. Should I create one?

java version "1.4.2_04"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_04-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_04-b05, mixed mode)

I set them up according to documentation.

Done - makes no difference.

I guess the ANT at /usr/share is installed by Fedora. I rechecked the
enviroments variables you posted. I noted the PATH contains 2 times some
paths:

/opt/SmartEiffel/bin
/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/bin
(others)

While I think it cannot "hurt". Please, "clean" it.

> Antonio> some jars in your endorsed dir?

I mean endersed jars in

/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04/jre/lib/endorsed

Another question:

What version returns if you run:

java -version.

Also try to remove this variables:

JAVA_PATH=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04
JDK_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04

(I never used them and I don't know why are needed) run:

unset JAVA_PATH
unset JDK_HOME

BTW, you downloaded j2sdk from Sun? How you installed it?

Re: INTSTALL.txt

Hi:

I use FC2 too. I am also using the same version of Java j2sdk1.4.2_04. I
really wonder where the problem is. Please run this command before:

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.2_04
(note the export key).

As an old UNIX user I noted often the problem is that people don't export
an environment variable in that waym when they run another bash instance
it is no more there. I am not telling this is your case. But just in case
I am pointing to this common issue.

Also, I am assuming you are using the bash. BTW, if this solve the
problem, don't forget to include the above line in your profile file.

Antonio Gallardo

This seems to happen in some rare cases (e.g.
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=xml-cocoon-users&m=108274021410015&w=4),
but until now I don't know in which one. At least it should not happen
as Cocoon sets all the important properties and paths. What it your
system, Colin? Might it be related to bash vs. boune shell
(http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?t=108552450600003&r=1&w=4)? This error
was fixed after 2.1.5, maybe you can try it out.
