headline problems
hi
this line is ok by itself in ns4.
<h1 class='headline'>Welcome to the mod_perl world</h1>
however if it is immidiately followed by untagged text like:
mod_perl brings together the full power ...
then there will not be any style asigned to that piece of text.
if we have for instance
<p>mod_perl brings together the full power ...</p>
things are ok provided we use a style for the p-tag (i
suggest the same as for body)
so why doesn't that work?
heh, took me hours to find out. it seems that if we have
.headline {
...
margin-right: xpx;
}
then whatever untagged text that follows will not inherit
any font-styles whatsoever.
so the way i see it there are the following solutions:
1) skip the <h1 class='headline'> code completly and built a
100% width table which is bound to work everywhere.
2) make sure that we _never_ have any untagged text, so at
least we have <p>some text ...</p>
3) skip the margin-right and f**k ns4
choice 2 is the cleanest, but is it possible, stas?

why it's easier? Because according to your words, if we have some text
without <p></p> it'll work the same. I'm not saying that we shouldn't fix
our content.

Currently no, at least without special parsing of the source text.
Originally I was enclosing everything in <p></p> but that was creating
improper HTML in cases the text had some other tags like <pre> inside it.

why?
can't we somehow garantee that we will always have min. a
pair of <p>-tags around naked text?

it is possible if the source html documents are written in proper HTML.
I've fixed the cvs version of index_top.html to have <p></p>
But then I suppose that the first solution is easier...

I'm -1 on rewrites if we can make the thing work with a single css. The
docs should be self containing and not rely on outside things, which
tend to change. Of course if we have no choice we will. FWIW, Allan has
a whole slew of changes to make everything work everywhere up his
sleeve. So let's try first to get these in.
In particular the site/docs shouldn't rely on Apache config,
since I think it's quite possible that people will want to mirror the site,
e.g. for their local Intranets (or build from scratch).

Right. This is also the @import trick, but I'm not sure if one method is
better than the other. Can we add rewrite directives to httpd.conf on
apache? rewrite in .htaccess is ugly, I think, due to the sub-requests.

Why is this even a problem? Create an NS4 specific stylesheet and use
mod_rewrite to select it when the NS4 client is detected.

Is this the common NS4 problem with style sheets not inheriting correctly?
Or something different.
Does it make sense to do the @import trick? Here's one link:
http://www.evolt.org/article/Assigning_browser_specific_styles/17/14732/inde
BTW - they have a brief article on building their site at:
http://www.evolt.org/article/rating/20/5816/ -- of course, there's lots of
examples about using NS4 with styesheets online. Lots of other examples on
ALA one example: http://www.alistapart.com/stories/sizematters/
