Website Improvements

I've committed changes to the top level of the Apache POI website to
subversion.

See https://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=48242 and http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?view=revision&revision=882301

You can see the proposed changes here: http://people.apache.org/~wave/site/index.html

I have not ventured into editing the sub-projects. Let me know if you
see anything that still needs attention. I'll move the changes onto
poi.apache.org tomorrow if there are no issues.

Regards,
Dave

Also, the language and release in our doap_POI.rdf file needs updating.

The information appears here: http://projects.apache.org/projects/poi.html

I propose we change:

"APIs for manipulating various file formats based upon Microsoft's OLE
2 Compound Document format using pure Java. POI is your Java Excel
solution as well as your Java Word solution. However, we have a
complete API for porting other OLE 2 Compound Document formats and
welcome others to participate."

to

"APIs for manipulating various file formats based upon Open Office XML
(ECMA-376) and Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document formats using pure
Java. Apache POI is your Java Excel, Word and PowerPoint solution. We
have a complete API for porting other OOXML and OLE 2 Compound
Document formats and welcome others to participate."

I was considering working on the smaller parts first. Now I think I'll
look at the POI for Excel part. I''m thinking about the outline and my
first thoughts are to add a second level to the outline on the Quick
Guide.

I think that we need both a Limitations and a To do page. Someone
should start a discussion about what to list. Of course there is a
cross-over.

+1. BTW - I noticed that we removed JDepend. Should we have some type
of class diagram / analysis of the whole api that gets generated?

> (c) "Contributer's Guide" - all its three items are obsolete

+1. A good to do list will be better. This is confused with the top
level anyway.

> not make much sense to me.

+1. This looks like an initial design proposition for the project. I
don't think we need to preserve it in the site.

+1.
the root-level pages look much better now.

As to the sub-projects, I think the first thing we should do is to remove the obsolete stuff.
Excel is the most commonly viewed part of the website and there are at least 4 items that can be removed:

(a) Limitations: spreadsheet/limitations.html - it lists Version 2.5 limitations. We should either synchronize or remove it.

(b) Pictorial Docs: spreadsheet/diagrams.html. This lists UML diagrams for POI 2.5, I don't think we need it.

(c) "Contributer's Guide" - all its three items are obsolete

(d) spreadsheet/use-case.html - in its current form this page does not make much sense to me.

Thanks. I've copied the update to the proper location. It will take a
few hours to get copied out to http://poi.apache.org/

I've also updated the project doap file.

Dave
