Hey guys,
I would like to add an svn:externals for
docs/manual/build in trunk - any concerns?

I don't expect anyone to rebuild the HTML. There are folks who are able and willing to do that. A line or two of docs, even if they don't build correctly, greatly help our overall doc effort.

Is it realistic to expect/demand that svn checkouts include only the xml
sources, the docs build/ tree, and that all developers are expected to
have java around to rebuild the .html's once on a fresh checkout and on
rolling a tarball?
This is a very different question from what should be in our tarball, which
aught to be the resulting manual/ html doc set.
In theory, 100MB becomes +/-60MB on a checkout, and +/-70MB in a tarball

Wow. I had no idea the docs were that much of it.

Putting any extra obstacles in front of anyone writing a doc is unwise.
I don't honestly think anyone minds checking out the repo at the current size. Have we heard complaints?

As said, I don't have a strong opinion, but since I hear the modem argument
a lot: people are connecting mobile these days pretty often and out of my
own experience - it's mostly just GPRS.

Doesn't seem like it's a terribly significant addition.

There was a lot of discussion about that in the past (about once every year, I
think). I don't have a strong opinion about either way, just pointing it out.
IIRC the argument against it was that not every developer should need to load
the tons of jar files. Thatswhy we provide the doc build tools as a separate
