Using SOAP as a credit card validation service?

I'm planning on making a java application, and I'm hoping to use a SSL
connection to communicate credit card validation information with a soap
service, then process the transaction at the server level, record
success or failure and return a result to the client.  Has anyone does
this yet?  Does anyone have any advice?  Thanks in advance!
