If you have a router then you need to open port 80 and forward it to
the local IP of the computer you're running Apache on. Also, it's not
uncommon for ISP's to block inbound port 80 connections so as to stop
you from running a web server from home; if all else fails then
contact your ISP and ask them if they filter your port 80 traffic.

Thank you patrick

I have just enabled port forwarding on my router, so all port 80 gets
directed to my computer, i have also set up DMZ on my network IP address, i
notice before though that Doug stated 81.106.180.125, that actually seems to
be my old I.P address, at my other house ?? (well other house, moved here
today). any way of changing this?

An nmap on scouse.mine.nu shows that everything other than 8080 is
filtered. My guess is that a control-freak ISP is at the bottom of this.

scouse.mine.nu --> 81.106.180.125  Doesn't reply on port 80 or 8080 and times out on a ping.

You seem to be:

Those are not really apache questions but a firewall that does network address translation and blocks port 80 would sure explain a lot of your problems.

Caroline, have you added the PHP module (i.e. mod_php)?
Maybe it would help if you could be a bit more specific..

I don't know of any. There are some good books that cover all of Apache,
MySQL and PHP and they come with install disks and instructions for the
Windows environment.

Probably the least painful approach would be to get one of these.

I am not sure if you actually have the .libs/libaprutil-1.so file
if you do, and libmysqlclient_r is not being linked to, then that
means that the buildconf failed to see the mysql file..

make sure it is there...

ls -l $HP_SRC/srclib/apr-util/dbd/apr_dbd_mysql.c

If not, then get it...

----------
Make sure that you have any custom library directories mentioned in /
etc/ld.so.conf
#/etc.so.conf is like this on my box
/opt/lib
/opt/lib/mysql
/opt/httpd/apr/lib

#And use ldconfig -v to refresh it..
-----------
Alternatively it maybe that your mysql install location is not being
found. This is the method i used for building mysql from source...

wget http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-5.0/
mysql-5.0.24a.tar.gz/from/ftp://ftp.mirrorservice.org/sites/
ftp.mysql.com/
tar -xzf mysql-5.0.24a.tar.gz
cd mysql
make clean
CFLAGS="-O3" CXX=gcc CXXFLAGS="-O3 -felide-constructors -fno-
exceptions -fno-rtti" ./configure --prefix=/opt --with-charset=utf8 --
enable-thread-safe-client --enable-threads=posix --with-ncurses
make all
make install
su
ldconfig -v
------------
Beyond that - I am not sure!!

Ben,
    Thank you so much for spending time with this.

    When I do
    cd $HP_SRC/srclib/apr-util
    ldd .libs/libaprutil-1.so

    I do not see mysql in there. How come?

Re: [users@httpd] httpd-2.2.3 / MySQL 5.0.24a - buildsteps and improved error reporting

Posted by Ben <be...@redsnapper.net>.
Hi Vasily - you are lucky .. only one day wasted!!

I just saw your second mail ....

cd $HP_SRC/srclib/apr-util
./buildconf

You don't need to do configure or make here - as it is taken care of
later on by the big configure
The need to run buildconf is so that the configure file gets to
notice the mysql file you wgetted in from Nick's site.
-------------

> DBD: No driver for mysql
I mentioned that error in an earlier mail -

"DBD: No driver for mysql" Your mysql_client_r is not linked properly!

ldd (apache install directory)/bin/httpd  | grep libmysqlclient_r

You should see
	        libmysqlclient_r.so.15 => /opt/lib/mysql/libmysqlclient_r.so.
15 (0x40184000)

NOT
	        libmysqlclient_r.so.15 => missing

If you have aprutil as a separate library, go to your libaprutil dir
and try

  ldd (aprutil install directory)/lib/libaprutil-1.so | grep
libmysqlclient_r

Once you can see if mysql is being linked by this

cd $HP_SRC/srclib/apr-util
ldd .libs/libaprutil-1.so

-------

Well, I'm HOPING that sorts it out for you!!
	-b.

PS IIRC removing existing apr-util installs is pretty essential -
check /usr/local etc for possible previous installs...

Gents,
    A very sad day here at the office. After following your directions,
step by step, I still get the error when firing up apache....
    DBD: No driver for mysql

    Which step do you think I am missing?

THANKS!!!

For sure Nick - anything to make life easier to install the system.
There's still a couple of areas that I'd like to improve - but it's
already more informative than the current stuff, which has to be a
good thing, I guess.
A peer review would be great - especially by someone who actually
understands the system! I certainly don't claim to...

I don't have time to review this now, but it looks useful. A ping
sometime the week after next will be appreciated.

Are you happy for parts of this to be incorporated into the
distributed code and docs?

Re: [users@httpd] httpd-2.2.3 / MySQL 5.0.24a - buildsteps and improved error reporting

Posted by Vasiliy Boulytchev <va...@linuxspecial.com>.
Gents,
    Right after this step...
       cd $HP_SRC/srclib/apr-util
       ./buildconf

       should I do anything else? Such as ./configure, make make install?

THANKS!

Hi Philip,
I got the apu as comes with 223 to work fine - but I had to get
around some issues - see my mail from 15 Sept.
Rob & I are building from the tarballs httpd-2.2.3.tar.gz and
mysql-5.0.24a.tar.gz

Re: [users@httpd] httpd-2.2.3 / MySQL 5.0.24a - buildsteps and improved error reporting

Hi Philip,
If you can provide a set of unambiguous buildsteps for MySQL 5.0.24a
over httpd-2.2.3, that would be very useful.
Anything else just doesn't really help me very much - due to the
large number of interdependant factors involved.

That would probably help.

MySQL is installed with --prefix=/usr/local. Includes are in
/usr/local/include/mysql and libs are in /usr/local/lib/mysql, See above. IMO
/usr/local is quite common when building from source.

This is not the same. I was talking about HAVE_MYSQL_H and HAVE_MYSQL_MYSQL_H.

httpd-2.2.3 source:

httpd-2.2.3$ grep -R HAVE_MYSQL_H *
srclib/apr-util/dbd/apr_dbd_mysql.c:#ifdef HAVE_MYSQL_H

httpd-2.2.3$ grep -R HAVE_MYSQL_MYSQL_H *
srclib/apr-util/dbd/apr_dbd_mysql.c:#elif defined(HAVE_MYSQL_MYSQL_H)

I don't see any defines, however, I do see ifdef's.. The complete section is
this:

#ifdef HAVE_MYSQL_H
#include <mysql.h>
#include <errmsg.h>
#elif defined(HAVE_MYSQL_MYSQL_H)
#include <mysql/mysql.h>
#include <mysql/errmsg.h>
#endif

Which leads me to believe that mysql.h and errmsg.h will never be included, at
least not in my case.

I've made several on another machine: neither have I. But then, on this other
machine I used the separate apr and apr-util (1.2.7) packages, so perhaps that
makes a difference.

So.. Maybe I'm going to give 1.2.8-dev a try.

You need apr 1.2.8-dev+ which uses mysql_confg find the libs and headers (if they these
are not in your standard paths)

Hi Rob,

Ok - well your sock is correct!
I did have some issues with character sets, hence those lines. They
may also be not relevant.

This is the complete MySQL error log. As it is a fresh install, there's not
much in it (I cleaned it after I got MySQL working).
It's correct that MySQL was started at 6:36 this morning.

I installed in /usr/local but wanted a different datadir and a different
location of my.cnf than /etc. I took care of that.

It's next to impossible to have old socks lying around: this is a fresh
install of both OS (Slackware) and software on another machine than the one
before.
I wanted to make sure that I'm not going to have problems with the remains of
any previous install.

Is this datadir in your [client] section?

My my.cnf contains this:
[client]
port            = 3306
socket          = /var/mysql/mysql.sock

[mysqld]
port            = 3306
socket          = /var/mysql/mysql.sock
datadir         = /var/mysql

So, it's all there.

No, I didn't run configure like that. I changed srclib/apr-util/Makefile later
to include most details but didn't have "-DHAVE_MYSQL_H". Going to try that.

Hi Rob,
Just 'cos I got it working on one machine doesn't say so much -
thanks for having a go.

It may be a good idea to get a tail on the mysql log ( hostname.err )

Also, because I had put mysql into a custom directory, I needed to
change some of the variables in my.cnf - that may make a difference
also.

The following are what I used - (you must change the paths accordingly!)
[client]
#password = your_password
port              = 3306
socket         = /opt/var/mysql.sock                  <--- make sure
this is to the correct sock! sometimes old socks are left lying around.
basedir        = /opt
datadir          = /opt/lib/mysql
tmpdir           = /tmp
language     = /opt/share/mysql/english
character-sets-dir =  /opt/share/mysql/charsets

I commented out the dbd.m4 file amends in the buildsteps of 15 Sept
- because they aren't necessary (the mysql.h logic in build.m4 is
just unreliable, IMO)
Instead, for the include of the files in mysql.h etc., it should be
dealt with when you run configure as follows:

CFLAGS="-DHAVE_MYSQL_H  -I/usr/local/include/mysql/ -L/usr/local/lib/
mysql/" ./configure [------------ your configure details ----------]

I am not sure, but I am guessing you didn't run configure like that -
because as you said, HAVE_MYSQL_H wasn't being identified.
Maybe you did that? Let me know!

Ben,

I have setup a new testserver because I'm getting tired of not getting
this to work: it's a clean install without much installed.

I installed MySQL-5.0.24a from source into /usr/local, set it up (have
it running), modified /etc/ld.so.conf and ran ldconfig.
I downloaded httpd-2.2.3 and apr_dbd_myqsl.c again and applied your
proposed changes to all those files. I'm using the apr/apr-util that is
included with httpd-2.2.3.

=============================
I have to modify srclib/apr-util/dbd/apr_dbd_mysql.c because it just
doesn't include the mysql.h and errmsg.h files on line 48:

/*
#ifdef HAVE_MYSQL_H
#include <mysql.h>
#include <errmsg.h>
#elif defined(HAVE_MYSQL_MYSQL_H)
#include <mysql/mysql.h>
#include <mysql/errmsg.h>
#endif
*/
#include "/usr/local/include/mysql/mysql.h"
#include "/usr/local/include/mysql/errmsg.h"

As far as I can tell, HAVE_MYSQL_H or HAVE_MYSQL_MYSQL_H are never
defined but maybe I'm not looking in the right place (httpd source,
mysql.h, don't know what else)..

=============================
When doing "configure" for httpd, I get the following errors:

/path/to/httpd-2.2.3/srclib/apr-util/configure: line 31269:

srclib/apr-util/configure reads on line 31266:

APU_CHECK_DBD
APU_CHECK_DBD_MYSQL
APU_CHECK_DBD_SQLITE3
APU_CHECK_DBD_SQLITE2

I don't think that is correct.. If I'm not mistaken, this configure was
built when running srclib/apr-util/buildconf ?

Now, srclib/apr-util/include/apu.h reads on line 81:

#define APU_HAVE_PGSQL         @apu_have_pgsql@
#define APU_HAVE_MYSQL         @apu_have_mysql@
#define APU_HAVE_SQLITE3       @apu_have_sqlite3@
#define APU_HAVE_SQLITE2       @apu_have_sqlite2@

I didn't see this before. I modified these lines into:

#define APU_HAVE_PGSQL         0
#define APU_HAVE_MYSQL         1
#define APU_HAVE_SQLITE3       0
#define APU_HAVE_SQLITE2       0

=============================
make clean && make

I *have* to make these changes to get it to work.
I get no errors anymore so I installed Apache.

=============================
Next I configured httpd.conf to test if DBD works.

DBDriver mysql
DBDPersist Off

DBDKeep 1
DBDMax 1

      AuthName "DBD authentication"
      AuthBasicProvider dbd
      Require valid-user
      AuthDBDUserPWQuery "SELECT pass FROM users WHERE user=%s"
</Directory>

I don't care I'm using root to access the database right now; this is
only a test setup, only used by myself and I want to make sure I'm able
to access the database.

apachectl restart

I browse to the page, get the logon dialog box and after I enter my
credentials it bails out with an error 500. error_log says this:

I'm sure you got it to work because otherwise you surely wouldn't have
written these buildsteps, but I can't get DBD-MySQL to work and I really
don't know what I seem to be doing wrong here. ;-\

Re: [users@httpd] httpd-2.2.3 / MySQL 5.0.24a - buildsteps and improved error reporting

The following method should build correctly. Moreover, error
reporting is more informative - and has saved me a lot of time already -
It's easy to misconfigure something, and get an error happening
somewhere.
Here are a set of buildsteps for a linux install (considerably
revised since the NetHack-esque mailing) - it appears to build and
install more reliably now.
This mail doesn't include the fact that you must make sure your
libmysqlclient_r is available to be linked to.

Install - with example values.

Further Thoughts
===========================================================
The above methods of error reporting keep errors away from the APR
library and give something meaningful in the error log also.
There is just one difference made to the mod_dbd API - which is that
apr_dbd_open now returns some errors in user_space, which is a good
way of dealing with error handling from the driver back to mod_dbd
and then back down via apr_dbd to retrieve the actual driver error.
Nick - I hope you can see the advantages of this approach.

Re: [users@httpd] mod_dbd mod_authn_dbd mod_authz_dbd confusion

Posted by Ben <be...@redsnapper.net>.
Ok well me and Rob Sterenborg have had similar issues - with near-
mystical results - follow the earlier threads (Apache 2.2.3 and MySQL
5.0.24a) from thursday 7 Sept and A NetHack-esque Journey of the
dark arts for DBD(mysql) under httpd-2.2.3 from 30 August for back
stuff about this.

The way in which authorisation is to be done from 223 is to use
mod_dbd to connect to mysql using the dbd mysql driver (hosted at
Nick Kew's site - which you probably have) - and then setting up the
conf files to suit. I made an early attempt to document my steps at
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/httpd-users/200608.mbox/%
3c4CDFC4BE-DF11-41D1-A15C-DAA5C7078546@redsnapper.net%3e

My current view is that the transition from something like
mod_auth_mysql to mod_dbd / mysql is NOT smooth. It may be a good
idea to rollback to Apache 2.0 until the dust settles, but if you are
brave and have time then contributions would be welcomed by at least
one person on this board!

Both Rob and I have successfully implemented 223/5024a to use
mod_authz_dbd - but neither of us are sure how or why one compile
worked while another didn't.

Good luck!
	Ben

[users@httpd] mod_dbd mod_authn_dbd mod_authz_dbd confusion

Posted by Vasiliy Boulytchev <va...@linuxspecial.com>.
Gents,
    I've been having awful time getting the mod_dbd, mod_authn_dbd,
mod_authz_dbd to work together. No good documentation has been found,
so I would love to hear what you guys have to say on this :)
    I would love to document my steps, and write a simple howto for
everyone to use!
    What I need, is a way I can authenticate people against a mysql
database, which was provided with mod_auth_mysql back in 2.0 realm.
Now, since 2.2.3 is out, mod_auth_mysql is not working, and the new way
does not seem to be documented properly.

    So, does anyone have any documentation they can point me to (other
than the obvious apache links)?

    I am completely stuck, and would love to get some help!

THANK YOU!

I don't see a single request for a .php file and each one of those
requests returend with a successful status code. Based on those logs,
there is nothing wrong with your server.

Ok, i have put the mod_php (LoadModule php5_module) Line in the httpd.conf,
also set the AddType. I saved the .conf file, and restarted the server, and
i am now getting the error "The requested operation has failed!".

I have entered the Lines :
LoadModule php5_module "c:\php2\php5apache2.dll"
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php .phtml
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php3.

I have checked the error & access logs, and they are absolutly no help to me
whatsoever!

Any help would be much appreciated

A) Calm down
B) Fix your DNS
C) DMZ has nothing to do with it
D) Check if your ISP blocks port 80
E) Load mod_php in your apache config
F) Stop trying to program php if you're so helpless on simple system
configuration and network issues, learn about computers in general
first.

How about this. Increase your log level go "info" like I mentioned
before and then stop Apache. Start it up again and then paste all of
the output it produces in error_log during the start up process to
this site: http://rafb.net/paste/

Oh, sorry about that, I read it as "doesn't state anything about the
error logs".

Try bumping up your log level to "info" by putting "LogLevel info"
into httpd.conf. Fatal errors really should be reported at even lower
levels, so it's doubtful that increasing the log level will actually
yield useful new information, but it's worth a shot.

Re: [users@httpd] PHP set up?!?!

Posted by Patrick Rutkowski <ru...@gmail.com>.
Programmers who are clueless about the underlying platform which they
are developing on tend to produce very poor code. If you don't even
know where log files are located then you should drop the idea of
doing PHP/SQL programming for at least at month and instead read up
on UNIX and Apache in general, there's plenty of material out there
and it would do you a world of good.

In the simplest of situations your log files will be located in
SERVER_ROOT/logs.

You probably shouldn't be doing any PHP or web-programming if your
have to ask such a question. I suggest that you look into learning
basic UNIX first.

Re: [users@httpd] PHP set up?!?!

How does flavor of linux distro have anything to do with it?

Apache works relatively the same anywhere it runs. Reinstalling is
not the solution. Look at your logs, gather up some data, analyze the
issue, figure out what exactly is going wrong, and fix it. Even if
you're just a php programmer and not an administrator you should at
least be able to diagnose and fix basic problems with a stock
standard php installation.

P.S. Keywords: "logs", "gather data", "analyze".

I used a Linux distro (Ubunto) that installed them both together. I am a
user, and did not to learn enough to be an apache administrator.

I suspect you are the same.

Uninstall and start over with a good distro.

Stephen
