I think what you want is a Valve. Check the documentation for 
org.apache.catalina.Valve. Unfortunately, this technique will not work 
for other application servers. This should be fairly obvious, though, 
since once you leave the servlet context, there are pretty much no rules 
specified by the servlet spec.
