There are a couple of issues here:
1) That the DisconnectException's constructor closes down the connection, so that the connection is closed even if the exception is never thrown. And any caller wanting to catch this exception cannot prevent the connection from being closed.
2) It is not clear to me that Reply.doSyntaxrmSemantics() should throw a DisconnectException at all. If it only has detected a protocol error it would make more sense to throw some other exception and leave the connection intact. That would make it possible to send a cleanup message, such as the one added in DERBY-2017, to the server as part of handling the exception.
