Introduction - Marketing Volunteer

Hello Apache Marketers,

I'm Paul. I have been creating online marketing strategies for small
businesses over the past ten years. I learned about SEO and long-tail
tactics way before it was ever a fad. I'm completing my MBA this semester
and just finished receiving my MLitt in Film Studies completing it while
taking a year off from my MBA. I'm all educated out and most interested in
creating media content for Apache - youtube videos, photoshop, facebook,
off-line tactics. I have been an Open Office user for a few years and would
like to give back some time if wanted.

I'm located in Hampton, Virginia. If any other marketers are in the
Virginia area then howdy!

Kadal,

That sounds real cool, but would the message being told be shown in 10-20
seconds? Maybe have clay men choose being Closed source and open source?

Dear Rob,

My son, is part of a young team who do claymation. ( All characters are in
clay and they are animated by moving by hand and filmed / shot frame by
frame ) I will check with them whether they can create a 10-20 second video
for openoffice.

Dear Uday,

Check with Kailash and come back

The current styling guidelines are here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/Branding+Style+Guide

But this is focused on in-product and web branding. We haven't really
had a coordinated YouTube presence, but maybe we can extrapolate.

Rob,

I noticed there is OpenOffice.org / OpenSource.org - really two different
target groups since there are people that make the programs / use the
programs. I agree that there has to be some type of guidelines to create a
streamline branding. It's definitely a problem if thousands of people are
all making unique marketing efforts but if they are all spread out it's a
waste of time. What I wanted to know really is if the founders/leaders have
certain colors, catch phrases, ex. they are already set on. If so they
could definitely be a starting point to create materials from / videos
from. I can say I have gotten lost trying to download OpenOffice off the
front page a few times. Saying that I think there should be more visuals
and not just all text too. We live in a world now of "app icons" and I
think it would be smart to create what people use now.

The website is mainly HTML and CSS. Some pages use a simplified
markup called "Markdown text". But styling is done with CSS.

We've been discussing a "visual signature" update for our next major
release (OpenOffice 4.0) in April. As part of this we will likely
update the logo. Previous discussions have been exploring the
possibility of having a public competition to design the new logo.

Hello Kadal,

Do you know what platform the website is running from? Are they using CSS /
blog or some other type? I might change the color of the logo. I'd be
interested in knowing Apache's goals/direction then I could really
understand how to market them better. Here is an idea attached.

Welcome Mr. Paul. I am another volunteer like you. Look at the page
opensource.org and can you suggest in the improvement of logo and other
layout?

With Warm Regards

Hello P.P,

Welcome to the project!

I see that you have some experience with Youtube?

We have a few videos on Youtube, but these were individual efforts,
nothing cohesive. One of the challenges (and opportunities) of large
open source projects like this is to coordinate and enforce branding
and common look and feel.

I wonder if there is anything that could be done to define the
standards that would enable other volunteers to produce Youtube
content to a common look and feel? I'm thinking of elements like
standardized titles, music and voice over intro, common tool set,
etc. Essentially a cookbook that other volunteers can follow to
create a professional "Apache OpenOffice"-branded video.

Regards,

-Rob
