Testing release candidate in the coming days

Jiadong,

Please let the team know the schedule for testing the release candidate you
are preparing in the next few days. Thank you.

Texera tutorial videos

Posted by Chen Li <ch...@apache.org>.
As part of the first Apache release, we are creating tutorial videos and
will publish them, possibly as a playlist, on the Texera YouTube channel.
Sarah Asad (included in this email) and I are leading the effort.

The initial plan of the videos is available in this Google spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FmWt8PgudxfE1mcOavSfSNzZkcboj60BDH9-5X7yYuI/edit?gid=0#gid=0

Feel free to share your thoughts on the plan and leave comments on the
sheet. We will make the videos soon.

Cheers,

Chen Li

Re: Testing release candidate in the coming days

Posted by Jiadong Bai <ji...@apache.org>.
Dear community,

I want to report the progress of preparing the release candidate for
v1.1.0-incubating. The progress is tracked by:
https://github.com/apache/texera/issues/4080. To summarize, there are two
major efforts:

*1. Making the release artifacts compliant with ASF policies. *
PR https://github.com/apache/texera/pull/4387 is the major one. It is
currently in the review process and hopefully can be merged by Apr 27.

*2. Enabling the LLM agent*
The discussion can be found at:
https://github.com/apache/texera/discussions/4404. Based on the discussion,
we decided to include the LLM agent in the release. There are several PRs
to enable the LLM agent. And they are currently being reviewed. The
tracking issue is: https://github.com/apache/texera/issues/4034. We plan to
get this series reviewed and merged by Apr 27.

After the above tasks are completed, I will create the release candidate
and initiate the voting process. Please feel free to leave your comments in
the mentioned issues or in this email thread.

Best regards,
Jiadong Bai

Re: Testing release candidate in the coming days

Posted by Jiadong Bai <ji...@apache.org>.
I revised the PR: https://github.com/apache/texera/pull/4387 based on the
verified licenses. Can PPMC members like @xiaozhenliu@apache.org
<xi...@apache.org> @kunwp1@apache.org <ku...@apache.org>
@linxinyuan@apache.org <li...@apache.org> review this PR as soon as
possible?

Best regards,
Jiadong

But it only contains the direct dependencies of texera. It didn't include the "dependencies of the dependency". The current sheet includes those. I think the errors are mainly on those "dependencies of dependencies", as I set them initially to be the same license as their parents.

Chen,
please proceed with a pass. I can fix them all together in a batch. That
would be more efficient.

Xinyuan,
yes I referred to
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wThRvegX1HILgc7e_J9Qu2hGyLntQeLYgc29kLJBsD0/edit?gid=1569444827#gid=1569444827
. But it only contains the direct dependencies of texera. It didn't include
the "dependencies of the dependency". The current sheet includes those. I
think the errors are mainly on those "dependencies of dependencies", as I
set them initially to be the same license as their parents.

Thanks,
Jiadong

I also had a pass, and it has fewer errors. Where those licenses came from?
Did we use the manually verified license list from last year?

Thank you, Jiadong.

I saw Chris (kunwp1@uci.edu) already checked his batch, and marked many
items as "wrong license." Do you know where these errors came from? Should
we fix the problem before other people check their batch? Or should we
rely on the checking results to change the licenses in the "LICENSE-binary"
file?

I created a spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kAxKorZGOjKO2hjVFgmYb4aCBy-MWVmy/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=112107075417491968565&rtpof=true&sd=true
.

This spreadsheet contains 8 batches of dependencies and their licenses. I
assigned a person for each tab. The assigned reviewers are:
Xinyuan Lin, Xiaozhen Liu, Kun Woo Park, Ali Risheh, Meng Wang, Matthew
Ball, Chen Li, and Xuan Gu
Please find the batch you are assigned to and start the review process.
Thank you

Thank you, Jiadong.

Meng, Matthew, Ali, Xuan, and Yicong, please give comments. I will do it
as well.

Re: Testing release candidate in the coming days

Posted by Jiadong Bai <ji...@apache.org>.
I just raised a PR: https://github.com/apache/texera/pull/4387.

This PR introduces the LICENSE-binary and NOTICE-binary that include a list
of licenses and notices of the dependencies that will be installed in the
convenience binaries (e.g. Docker images). For more details please read the
PR description.

As it is a large change and requires cross validations to make it accurate,
I would like to have three PPMC members, @linxinyuan@apache.org
<li...@apache.org> @kunwp1@apache.org <ku...@apache.org>
@xiaozhenliu@apache.org <xi...@apache.org> as the primary reviewers.
But other PPMC members are highly recommended to take a look at the PR and
give any comments / suggestions. Feedback and comments are welcome from
everyone in the community as well.

Best regards,
Jiadong Bai

Re: Testing release candidate in the coming days

Posted by Jiadong Bai <ji...@apache.org>.
Sure. I am working on the following three issues to make sure Texera is
compliant with ASF requirements:
- https://github.com/apache/texera/issues/4396
I hope by solving these issues, we can close these issues and their parent
issues: https://github.com/apache/texera/issues/4372
https://github.com/apache/texera/issues/4371

Meanwhile, we are also discussing whether to include the AI feature in the
first release: https://github.com/apache/texera/discussions/4404 . Based on
the discussion result, I will decide whether to include the AI feature in
the next release candidate.

I hope to get the release candidate ready by early next week.

Best regards,
Jiadong Bai
