Handling of nil column values

Is there any discussion about this? is it up to the application right  
now to specify nil values? If you have them right now entire jobs die  
because the SerDe throws index out of bounds exceptions.

We should fix the SerDe for that.
Can you open a jira and attach a test case? (Or if you already have one,
please post the link here)
