[jira] Created: (FELIX-1111) Ability to run Karaf on Equinox

Ability to run Karaf on Equinox
-------------------------------

                 Key: FELIX-1111
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FELIX-1111
             Project: Felix
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: Karaf
            Reporter: Guillaume Nodet

Not sure how to do that, but we need to be able to run on equinox.
A possibility would be to include both felix and equinox in two different main jars and ship both.
Another option would be to have two different distributions.

In both cases, we need to first investigate possible problems with equinox and solve them.

Alin Dreghiciu commented on FELIX-1111:
---------------------------------------

The sitch is "osgi.noShutdown" and is by default true. The only thing it does is to not do an System.exit after the framework has been started and there is not eclipse application active.
But in karaf case the vm will exist due to "natural causes" = there is no active non daemon thread.

-----------------------------------

There is (at least was) another switch:

osgi.framework.activeThreadType=normal

This did/does what you want. See comment on FELIX-1105 as well.

Right, I don't really expect any problems, especially as all the parameters for the OSGi runtime are standardized ...

Could you take a look at the comment on FELIX-1105, I'm not sure to understand if the shell should be or should not be a daemon thread....

Committed revision 771836.

The framework to use is specified by the karaf.framework properties in etc/config.properties.
It can be switched to "equinox" or "felix".
The main jar has been modified to dynamically hack the classloader and add the required bundle into the classpath at runtime.

It seems there are a few problems with some of the gshell bundles that do not start correctly, thus a few commands are missing.
Not sure what happen yet.

I have tried to run gshell on equinox via pax runner and the only "problem" was related to the need that the shell thread to be a daemon thread.

The new embedding API (RFC 132) should making working on both fairly trivial. If there are any containerisms, we should work to eliminate them.

[jira] Resolved: (FELIX-1111) Ability to run Karaf on Equinox

Guillaume Nodet resolved FELIX-1111.
------------------------------------

       Resolution: Fixed
    Fix Version/s: karaf-1.0.0

Problems have been resolved AFAIK.
There is still one problem which is that the "osgi/list" command does not display correctly the state of Spring-DM powered bundles if the gshell.osgi bundle has been started after some other bundles, but this is not related to equinox.

Richard S. Hall commented on FELIX-1111:
----------------------------------------

Definitely Equinox does this differently than Felix. I know if you are not using their shell then somehow you have to create a non-daemon thread. I think they might have a configuration switch for this.
