Tomcat & Apache (Linux) server logs

Hello,
    I am looking for information on how to configure the log files for the tomcat setup (jsp & servlets). I am running Apache 1.3.12 and Tomcat 3.0 (source d/l & compile). I found some information on logging settings for mod_jserv:

, which seemed to make sense. But then it talks about examples/jserv.properties. Is this approach still valid for Tomcat? For some reason I am thinking this should be in an xml file.

I assume this is a FAQ, but I have spent several hours looking for the question or answer without success. I think I'm missing the proper phrasing of my question, or else I'm too much of a java newbie to see the obvious. I'd be happy to write up some documentation from a newbie's point of view once I understand the answer.
