Simple, project-wide refactorings to more modern String and Collection APIs.
* should be more consistent and easier to read
* potential to be faster and produce less garbage in some cases
* most of this was done via NetBeans declarative refactoring scripts but reviewed manually
(it should be easier to review by looking at the individual commits separately)
