[VOTE] New name for UIMA TextMarker
Hi,
we are currently looking for a new name for the Apache UIMA TextMarker
system (language and workbench) and invite the UIMA comunity to vote for
a name.
This is not a formal vote. The vote should be cast for one of the
following options, but is not limited to those.
Option 1:
name: UIMA-TRL
(full) name: UIMA Text Rule Language
package identifier: trl
Option 2a:
name: UIMA-RUCOLA
(full) name: UIMA RUle-based, COncise text annotation LAnguage
package identifier: rucola
Option 2b:
name: UIMA-RUCOLA
(full) name: UIMA RUle-COre (text) LAnguage
package identifier: rucola
Option 3:
name: UIMA-RUCOTALA
(full) name: UIMA RUle-based, COncise Text Annotation LAnguage
package identifier: rucotala
Please cast your vote(s):
[ ] +1 Option ... is a suitable name
[ ] 0 Don't care for option ...
[ ] -1 Option ... is not OK, because ...
All votes are welcome, but only votes of UIMA PMC members are binding.
Votes with -1 must provide some substantial (e.g. legal) objections.

Given that this is now a discussion thread I'll just say I'm glad to see
that UIMA-RUTA seems to be winning. I think (from a Spanish perspective)
that "ruta" fits nicely with finding/matching things within a document.

The Apache voting process is well defined and this thread turned into a
discussion
about which names are suitable.
I suggest that we have a new vote on one specific name to reach
consensus here.

I haven't specified the "end"-conditions of the vote before. If nobody
disagrees, then the name with the most votes wins (no 50% majority). In
order to allow the others to react, the voting is automatically extended
by 24h, if someone casts or changes his vote.
So, if there are no new votes and nobody changes his vote, then I will
close the vote tomorrow and the name would be UIMA-RUTA.
Can someone please investigate the validity of the name? I did it
already, but two checks are better than one.

UIMA-RUTA isn't too bad either ;)
Btw a funny thing:
"ruta" (spanish) translates to "route", "road".
TRL could be spoken "trail" which falls into a similar domain.
So I update my votes:

I think UIMA-RUTA (Rule-based Text Annotation) describes the main
concepts of textmarker quite well, and I also like the fact that there
is one name, which is extended to describe sub-components.
The package identifier would be "org.apache.uima.ruta" and in plain text
different variants can be used, e.g., UIMA Ruta or UIMA RuTA.
So I change my vote to:
UIMA-RUTA: +1
A short summary of current votes:

Next adaption:
What about UIMA-RUTA? (without the "L" for language)
We could then refer to RUTA Language and RUTA Workbench, and it wouldn't
sound like a some medicine.
There are some trademarks, but I haven't found any problematic ones
(mostly beverages).

Both of these seem OK to me. I did a quick check on RUTAL including Bing web search and trademarks (USPTO) search - didn't find anything.

I agree with Marshall in most points.
Here are some additional comments:
RUCOTALA is too long in my opinion.
RUCOLA and RUCOTALA are very similar: The acronym is a bit constructed and
you won't actively use the full name. I think RUCOLA is better than
RUCOTALA,
because it is shorter and a real word.
TRL: The name itself is not as nice as others, but it is short and you
can actively use
the full name (UIMA Text Rule Language). I think this is important when
you talk
to people outside of the UIMA community. They instantely know what you
are talking about.
On the other side, that are just three word put together, which doesn't
sound completely right.
RUCOTALA was derived from the fact that the name should refer to
something about "text" and maybe "annotation".

Some specific comments:
UIMA-TRL - good that it's short an simple.
For the rest of the candidates, I think in actual documentation, the full names
should not use the upper-case acronym convention - it disrupts the readability,
in my opinion.
In general, I think the shorter names are preferable.
