Struts + WebSphere/WebLogic

This is slightly off topic but I have been charged with the task of
evaluating WebLogic. My group is currently using Struts 1.0.2 and Struts 1.1
RC1 for most of our applications and deploying them to WebSphere 4.0.3.

We are at a point of making a decision to either upgrade to WebSphere 5 or
move to WebLogic.

Since we are developing almost exclusively using Struts I was wondering what
the opinions are of Struts users using both platforms? Im mostly interested
in views from the developer's perspective since our boxes are administered
by a separate group.

Thanks in advance for your opinions,

Shane

I have been a weblogic developer now for about 4 years. I have also spent a
little time with WAS. But my suggestion would be to move to jBoss, the
money u save on the app servers lic could be spent better in other places.

Hi,

I think your requirements will be the deciding factor
on what to use, i think both was and weblogic are of
same in regards to performance, u do need to do a lot
tunning to make them work to optumal efficeincy,
next come the $$ factor, go who gives the best deal
:-)

Re: Struts + WebSphere/WebLogic

Shane,

This question can become a religious war about the merits
of WS or WebLogic so what I present here is my personal
hands-on development experience.

I have been using WebLogic 7 sp2 with Struts 1.1 and Tiles
without issue.

I am using JBuilder 8 and using the integrated debugging
feature which is allowing me to easily deploy and debug
right from within JBuilder. I know other IDE's have this
capability but from my experience this has proven to be an
outstanding environment to develop with.

I have been using EBJGen to handle all the automatic
generation of my EJB's specs for CMP and have saved
considerable time in using this tool bundled with
WebLogic.

Bottom line: Have used both WS and WebLogic with Struts
and Tiles and prefer beyond a shadow of a doubt to work in
a WebLogic based environment. My personal opinion...run
like hell to WebLogic!! Ok..now I have really stirred the
pot :)
