Issue 14 (Wicket: Create animated launch page for website) Question

Can this be done in flash? If so, what dimensions should it be?

Thanks,
Mark Loika

let me quote mark's comment[0] on the ghop issue tracker along with a link
to the showcase file[1]:

"I just wanted to post a recent project I did in flash. It is a demo
video player that
I made for a potential job offer. They said that if I wasn't still in
high school
than they would have hired me. I do not claim to have made the videos
in the video
player demo, they are property of their respective owners who posted
them on youtube.

The purpose of this is to show that I'm fairly capable in flash, and
that if you do
allow me to make the intro than it will be a finished, polished product."

martijn already stated his opinion about it.
can we get some more statements please?

as this is about the launch page for the wicket website, we should
have more than ~2 opinions.

It definitely won't have a "skip-intro" button :) But I do recommend a
loading screen, viewers with a dial-up internet connection may have to wait
a couple seconds while starring at a blank screen before it loads completely
without a one. It's entirely your choice though, I want to make it fit your
needs.

So, do I have the go-ahead to make it in flash?

right, the not maintaining part of flash sounds good.
if it's flash, it should not have a loading screen with the oh so famous
"skip intro" button,
'cause that annoys the hell out of me ;)
if this "criteria" is met, i'm oky with flash too.

I'm more for JavaScript based on Bernie's animator or YUI!'s animation
library. Both libraries are known here and can be easily supported when Mark
is graduating from college instead of maintaining the Flash file.

Also the Apache site is devoid of flash and afaik flash is not an open
(source) standard.

The javascript for this is not too complicated and easy to implement cross
browser using the YUI! and Bernie's libraries.

If it is implemented in flash, I won't be able to maintain it.

So: -0.5 on flash +1 on javascript.

so how do we proceed?
flash based or javascript based?

mark is willing to take over this task, but he rather wants it to do with
flash.

ideally the logic should not be a problem. Just use the Animator.js library
to create the animations. As long as you document and write clear code this
is not rocket science.
I'd prefer JavaScript, as I don't have tools to work with flash, nor any
experience, and I don't think it works well on the Apache site (there is no
flash present on any of the sites IIRC).
