footer from custom layout not added

Hello

I wrote a simple custom layout in order to generate
an xml log file.
My class extends Layout and overrides the format, 
getHeader and getFooter methods.

Both getHeader and format are called, but I don't
have my root enclosing tag (return by the getFooter
method) in my log file. getFooter doesn't seem to
be called...

any idea ?
