Downloading SVN command-line client binaries for Windows

Hi.

This is what I was looking for: SVN command-line Windows binaries. I
didn't want to change my computer's configuration, so I wanted something
I could extract from an archive, and not some setup tool.

I went to http://subversion.tigris.org/ and clicked Windows binaries. I
was given 5 options:

1) CollabNet (Certified binaries)
2) Tigris.org: Apache 2.0
3) Tigris.org: Apache 2.2
4) SlikSVN: 32 and 64 bit client MSI
5) VisualSVN (VisualSVN Server)

So, I wanted a client, which in my mind would rule out 2), 3) and 5). I
tried 1), but I was not allowed to download anything from there. It
seems I have to become a customer of theirs to download, and I certainly
did not want to do that.

Then I tried to find something on Google without any luck.

I tried option 4), where I extracted the msi with 7zip. It contained a
cab file, which I extracted with WinRAR. That contained some files,
which sounded right, but when I tried using it, it complained about a
missing dll, and I could not find out what to do about that.

Then, even through I looked for a client and not a server, I clicked on
option 3). I then found a list with a lot of unrelated stuff, but in the
end, there was a zip. It worked!

All in all, I used almost an hour to find a download for SVN. Would it
be possible to make it easier to find? I find it very counter-intuitive,
that I have to click a link saying *Apache*, when I want a *client*.

If you want to reply to me, you can do so at
mail atsign jesperkristensen,dk
But plase do not put my email address in some public mail list archive
in an unencoded form. Use Bcc.

Thanks
Jesper Kristensen

Better than calling names would be a suggestion of how nos. 2&3
could be made more intuitive for the first time visitor, e.g. "includes
modules for Apache 2.0 and 2.2 resp.". Of course this would cost
a little bit more bandwidth for the newbies who haven't bookmarked
the real download page yet.

AFAIK the Collab.net binaries include i.a. Apache, so just the stuff
the OP exactly didn't want. And he wanted plain binaries, not an
installer that might or might not fiddle with the configuration of his
machine.

CollabNet is a FREE registration. Nothing to be scared of. It's a very
good package.

2) and 3) include both client AND server components (and do not
include Apache). If you don't use the server components, all you're
doing is giving up about 10MB of disk space.

I once tried to find something on Google and failed too. And then I
tried different search terms and did find something.

Why are you doing this? The MSI is meant to be installed directly, not
tinkered with on a whim.

The builds on tigris.org include both client and server components,
and different versions are required for Apache 2.0 vs. Apache 2.2, so
a clear distinction is made.

The links are provided on the front page. The packages do document
what's included with them. Your own stubbornness (see above, refusing
to sign up for a free account w/ CollabNet, screwing around with the
pre-packaged MSI, not reading the documentation) resulted in it taking
an hour.

You already put your own address on the mailing list by posting. You
can't dictate what happens after that point.

I think Tortoise's command line options rather aim at integrating
TSVN with other apps, e.g. adding custom toolbar buttons to an
editor, than using it from the command line. As Ryan wrote it's
foremost a GUI, tightly integrating with Windows Explorer.
Anyway, TSVN comes as installer package, makes changes to the
configuration (registry), and certainly would not run by simple
unpacking as DJH's binaries at Tigris do - and what was what the
OP wanted.

CollabNet also has a client-only package available.

TSVN is great, but some things will always be easier on the command line.

Actually, the below (at least, the CollabNet and Tigres binaries;
don't know about the others) include both server and client.
TortoiseSVN is a GUI client, while the preceding include command-line
clients.

If you are looking for the client, you want TortoiseSVN.the ones you listed
below are the SVN Server products. I believe tortoise also has command line
options, but I am not sure. I am also sure there are other clients besides
tortoise.it's just the only one that I have used.

1-4 will allow you to dl the server.I have dl'd from all of those sources.
#5 is for Visual studio use and I have never attempted to dl that sine I
don't use VisualStudio..so can't help on that *grin*
