Unable to invoke init method of script

I am implementing my own provider class, and I get this 
exception:

Ouch, the call failed:    Fault Code   = SOAP-ENV:Server   
Fault String = Unable to invoke init method of script 
invoker: java.lang.NullPointerException 

Here's the offending line:

// get at the target object
		targetObject = 
ServerHTTPUtils.getTargetObject (serviceManager,
			dd, targetObjectURI,
			servlet, session,
			context);


Any ideas?

I also need to send/receive HTTP Basic Auth info...how to 
do this?
