Query cancellation for Athena is not supported in Superset 5.0.0. The Athena engine spec does not implement any cancellation methods, and the official feature matrix confirms that Athena does not allow queries to be canceled from Superset’s UI or backend. This is a known limitation, not a bug, and is due to the lack of cancellation support in both the AthenaEngineSpec and the underlying Athena service as integrated with Superset. You can see this documented in the [engine specs README](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/db_engine_specs/README.md#L107-L727) and in the [Athena engine spec code](https://github.com/apache/superset/blob/829e4d92d91ceae4b43b1ed3b063ffe45377799c/superset/db_engine_specs/athena.py#L26-L93).
Currently, there are no built-in workarounds in Superset for stopping Athena queries. If you need to terminate a long-running Athena query, you must do so manually via the AWS Athena console. For managing query duration, consider optimizing your queries or using Superset’s timeout settings to limit execution time, but note that these will not actually cancel the query on Athena’s side.
