Just tried it and had no problems. The syntax I usually use for gzip'd
tarballs is "tar -zxvf file.tar.gz", but this relies on having a tar utility
that understands gzip'd files. Otherwise you'll need two steps (as your
difficulty implies you did in this case). My only guess is that something went
wrong while you were downloading the file, but it's difficult to see why you
wouldn't have encountered this problem while gunzip'ing the file...
