Question: HP-PCL5-renderer

Hello,
we are using FOP for a while.
Now, we have some need for using it on an OS/390 host system.
There are some problems with the pdf-format on that machine.
Native PDF printers are expensive and unusual.
Existing converters (for example IBM Infoprint Server) are too bad.
There is also a performance problem with the conversion (we have to
print lots of documents, lots means something like 80000).
So it would to be really great to have a PCL5 renderer.
Now the question(s):
Does anyone know an existing FO to PCL5 renderer ?
How difficult is it to write one for FOP ?
Are there any additional documents available how to write renderers for
FOP ?
What output quality could I expect from such a renderer ?
Any ideas are welcome
Thanks
Martin Roob

Hi,

How about using ghostscript to convert PDF to PCL5? But it is probably
not ported to OS/390.
Just a thought!

I will soon have a similar need (printing on AS/400)

I think Art Welch has mentioned a PCL renderer sometime, maybe he can donate
it to FOP ?

I've been thinking about setting up a printer on linux via apsfilter
which accepts PDF.

Maybe you could use org.apache.Fop.apps.PrintCommandLine ? It
uses the AWTRenderer and doesn't rely on pdf but on the printing
system of the OS, but maybe the output quality isn't as high as
you need it.

Art Welch mentioned that he wrote a PCL Renderer. You could
also ask at www-xsl-fo@w3.org (http://www.w3.org/Mail/Request)

Don't know. Is HP still selling their pcl specification?

No, but Renderer and PDFRenderer have some comments, which
should be a good starting point.

I think this rather depends on the way you write the renderer and
the quality of the input (image resolution, fonts etc.), but Art would
be the one to ask.
