The Kupu editor isn't following the proper rules as far as when you can edit a
document or what state and edited document will go in. If the document is in a
review state, the Kupu editor will allow it to be edited. If the document is in
a live state, saving from Kupu will not move it to authoring. I think this is
due to the fact there is no xconf file for Kupu. It was removed in svn commit
r492470. Bitflux and FCKeditor both work.

It was just a guess. I don't use Kupu either. I was trying to do some 
testing on a clean checkout and it was the most convenient thing to use, 
until I discovered it didn't work. Or rather it didn't change workflow 
states.
