Need a mentor to guide me contribute to hadoop
Hi,
I am pursuing my master in computer science. I would like to
contribute to the hadoop. Can someone tell me how can I find a mentor.
Thanks,
Ravi.

Sure. I will definitely do that.

Kathey is correct, it doesn't do you any harm to mention your desire on
the Hadoop list. In the meantime, I'm working on finding a mentor for
you. The more visible you are within the community the more likely
someone will be willing to step forward.
This is especially true since you have been using Hadoop for a while.
Showing that you have an understanding of how to build and deploy a
small cluster shows that you are don't need really basic hand holding,
but instead are looking for guidance in the way things are done around here.

I am not sure which of these projects were implemented already but you
may find some ideas at:
http://wiki.apache.org/general/SummerOfCode2009. For Derby we have a
newcomer checkbox in Jira to hightlight issues appropriate for
newcomers. I am not sure if Hadoop has something similar. I think
you should ask on the Hadoop list for ideas and also see if you can get
a mentor to volunteer. One incentive for mentors might be to let the
list know that you are willing to help out with some project that they
are working on anyway if there are appropriate subtasks that you can
help out with.
I have someone else looking for a mentor on Geronimo. I think he found
help there, but noone who wanted to get involved in the formal mentoring
program, so he is keeping it informal. I am not sure the general feeling
about it in the Hadoop community.
Thanks

Hi Ross,
I have been using Hadoop for 6 months. I have a Hadoop cluster on 4 nodes.
Till now I concentrated mainly on developing new map-reduce algorithms. I
have been reading the Hadoop code also. Since I have used Hadoop for
implementing my algos, I feel that I should contribute back to Hadoop which
helped me a lot. This is how open-source works. Give and take. Right?
Ravi.

Did you setup a (mini-)Hadoop cluster already? Did you try checking out the
source from svn and building it on your machine?
Is there any specific issue you followed or any component that interests you?
It is always more fun to be able to work on stuff that you like and that
interests you compared to being assigned work. After all, working on free
software projects should be fun ;)

on hadoop mailing list and closely following the issues.

Ravi,
Do you have an answer for Isobels question? I realise you did not
highlight any specific activities in your overview, but now that you
have had time to look around is there anything specific you would like
to work on?
I'm going to take you details to the Hadoop community in a few minutes
to see if there is interest in mentoring you.

I suppose you have subscribed to the Hadoop mailing lists already? You should
also have a look at the "How To Contribute" wiki page of Hadoop:
http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/HowToContribute
Do you already have any particular topic or JIRA issue in mind you would like
to work on?

Hi Ravi,
Our mentoring programme is still very young so our processes are fairly
ad-hoc right now. I'm going to start off by pointing you at the
documentation we have, but we are aware that they may not be entirely
complete so do ask for clarifications here.
Please take a look at our mentoring page at [1], if you are planning on
working on hadoop as part of your masters you should also read [2].
From [1] you will see that you need to complete an application "form".
This gives us enough background information to enable us to approach

mentors in working out your mentored activity.
