I would add a simple darker border anyway. It would be more consistent with the icons on the toolbar: they all have dark outlines. Besides I would keep the "cheap" shadow as an option (dark outline 1 pixel down): it makes the text more readable on the yellowish part for example. I would definitely get rid off the grid.
