[jira] Created: (JSPWIKI-504) New default look for 3.0

New default look for 3.0
------------------------

                 Key: JSPWIKI-504
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JSPWIKI-504
             Project: JSPWiki
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: Default template
            Reporter: Janne Jalkanen
            Priority: Blocker
             Fix For: 3.0

Folks, I'm kinda tired of our old look. I would like to propose that we retire the old, plain look (which looks very HTML 2.0) to an optional skin, and adopt a completely new default look to signify the milestone marker to a new life under Apache.

However, we *do* need the hand of a capable graphic designer on this one.

Any volunteer helpers? Feel free to attach your skins as proposals to this issue ;-)

Any chance you could start checking in the code already? Would be nice to get more people working on this.

[FYI, this is a message I'd drafted a fair bit ago but haven't been able
to finish, but the skins are relatively finished... I'd be willing to
take the basic Acme skin and work up a version for 3.0 when that makes
sense.]

I really must say I prefer the header element be identified by ID, not
class. It's best to use IDs if there will only be one. You can then use
containment on any of its subelements. Adding this to the 'class'
attribute is an unnecessary complication.

I actually just finished a first draft of several interrelated skins
based on a slightly-altered template (called "acme") built for JSPWiki
2.8.2. The skins include a new one for the CeryleWiki, one for a local
wiki at work, and a new default skin for JSPWiki (including a new
cleaned up version of the logo, which retains its basics but is cleaned
up and available as SVG*). The skins are relatively lightweight (the
skin.css file for 'Acme' is 5.6K). There's also a test skin called
'Grid' that colors the basic blocks, making it easier to debug placement.

I'll stress that I'm not entirely done and there's been little testing
so far, but I'm happy with them. I'll also note that this doesn't do
much at all in attempting to simplifying/clarifying the existing JSPs
vis a vis jspwiki.css, i.e., where there are a few template changes,
these are primarily skin changes and the 'acme' template is not very
different from 'default', apart from handling the Header.jsp a bit
differently: having an optional header that spans the entire page
left-to-right. There's a new PageName.jsp that handles overly-long page
names better. It retains the basic functions of the current hover-over
logo, adds a Copyright.jsp that would probably be optional for most
people (uses CC logo and links). I've also not tested the right-side
favorites option at all (that feature will likely be removed from our
production service, for simplicity' sake -- there's only so much time).

Janne, what would you prefer I do next with the 'acme' template and
'Acme' and 'Grid' skins? Post this somewhere? I can't commit to much
additional time on altering the underlying JSPs or jspwiki.css, and
there'd be still some work to do on integrating i18n. This is mostly
an attempt to create a cleaner looking template from which I could
build a few others, plus attempt to rationalise the way wiki titles,
page names, breadcrumbs, and the like are placed, so my primary
contribution here would be a prettier template with some graphics.

Murray

* it also proposes a base colour of a shade of dark blue, which is used
   as the tint of the skin detail, which is otherwise mostly white

I think the way how CSS identifiers and classes are used in JSPs needs to be improved for now too many things need to be handled especially. It should be possible to achieve good-looking and consistent results with a rather small CSS.

Making a "redish skin", for instance, is nearly undoable and results in a large CSS files and heavy utilization of Firebug to find out "why things look like they do".

It would be much easier if for instance all "header text elements" shared one class so it can be referenced in CSS as such:

{code}

<h1 class="header ...">Title 1</h1>
<h2 class="header ...">Title 2</h2>
<th class="header ...">Table</th>
<div class="header ...">Welcome</div>
<div class="error header">Error</div>

Well, it's really about changing the CSS, not the template itself. I'd like us to simply look better, as the current JSPWiki look predates the *previous* crash (not this one).

Simplification of the css is something to be worked on for v3.0 as it blocks the development of new skins.

I've have been looking into the work of OOCSS [http://wiki.github.com/stubbornella/oocss] which promotes the reuse of css-classes as if it were reusable components. This is similar to the proposal of Goran, but ... I'dont think we need css-classes for the headers. (styling of the h1/h2/h3 tags should suffice)
But probably much less unique #block-id's and much more reusable .css-classes.

Additionally, I'm considering to rename some of the main css-elements to align with eg Wordpress template, so we can easy the porting of new templates/skins.
(eg 'pageactions' should become 'menu'; 'favorites' should become 'sidebar', etc.)

Finally, I've been working to add lots of inline documentation to the css style; to simplify the future maintenance.
Also commonly used colors, border-styles etc. should be documented consistently, to ease skinning.

FWIW, I have always thought it would be neat to make our default theme compatible with WordPress CSS. That would make it a lot nicer.

Recommend we delay this until 3.1. I am having quite a bit of difficulty working my way through the JSP migration for 3.0 as it is...

I think it's safe to take whatever is in trunk right now. However, since it's in a fluid state, you probably want to keep people fairly up-to-date as to where you are going :-). One option would be to just simply check in a "modern" (or whatever you feel is an appropriate name) skin, and keep modifying that. So we can then just simply switch the default to that!

I support re-working the default look. The current one is fine, but it's a bit sparse and not very modern looking.

One thing to keep in mind is that the 2.x JSP layer is being slowly ripped out and replaced with Stripes-enhanced JSPs. That should not affect the CSS at all, but know that certain aspects of the default templates *will* change.

In particular, you should assume that templates/default/DefaultLayout.jsp will be the template that everything in 3.0 will ultimately inherit its looks from. So, if you have structural changes you want to make, make them there.

JSPs that will almost certainly be retired in 3.0 will be templates/*/admin/AdminTemplate.jsp, templates/*/EditTemplate.jsp, and templates/*/ViewTemplate.jsp. They are still there for backwards compatibility, for now. But they will vanish sooner or later.

[jira] Commented: (JSPWIKI-504) New default look for 3.0

Goran Karlic commented on JSPWIKI-504:
--------------------------------------

Dirk, I looked into OOCSS and I feel that it points into the right direction: having a patterns for XML to CSS relations. Nevetheless the code would heavily rely on OOCSS and simple things quickly get complicated again. This for example is a very simple OOCSS module (taken from the publicly available documentation):

{code:xml}
<div class="mod">
	<b class="top"><b class="tl"></b><b class="tr"></b></b>
	<div class="inner">
		<div class="hd">
			<h3>Mod</h3>
		</div>
		<div class="bd">
			<p>Mod is the basic container, all other containers inherit from this one. This is the high performance container that should be used unless you specifically need another type of container.</p>
			<ul class="simpleList">
				<li>One tiny image</li>
				<li>Expands to any height or width</li>
				<li>Compatible with any content</li>
				<li>Choose for any container object that doesn't require outside transparency or complex borders.</li>
			</ul>
		</div>
	</div>
	<b class="bottom"><b class="bl"></b><b class="br"></b></b>
</div>
{code:xml}

Adding a border in CSS is rather complicated here.

In contrast, applying patterns to the problem must result in the conclusion that simplest container (glyph) must be a "flyweight" (see {{GTW}} from {{Gamma}}) that inherits from multiple classes (read: is a {{container}}, is a {{text container}}, is a {{image container}}).

{code:xml}
<div>Container 1</div>
<div class="container"  />
<div class="container image">
	<img src="A.png" />
</div>
<div class="container text">Text 1...</div>
<div class="container image"><img src="A.png" /></div>
<div class="container text">Image Title</div>
<div class="container text">Text 2...</div>
<div" class="container special" id="specialContainerInstance">Special container</div>
{code:xml}

Every instance that needs to be identified has also an {ID}}. HTML elements like {{h1}} should be only used if they retain they original (X)HTML meaning. Then, in CSS one can then quite fluently build a selector to select almost any set of related elements (glyphs):

{noformat}
div.container {display:block;}
div.container.image {float:left;}
div.container.image + div.container.text {clear:right;}
div.container.text {clear:both;}
#specialContainerInstance {color:red;}
{noformat}

When we decide for the solution here, we should also keep in mind, that from XHTML various output formats can result (PDF, DocBook, FOP to name few). Thus, the XHTML we ouput in JSPWiki should not be much more than XHTML ;-)

[jira] Updated: (JSPWIKI-504) New default look for 3.0

Posted by "Piotr Tarnowski (JIRA)" <ji...@apache.org>.
     [ https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JSPWIKI-504?page=com.atlassian.jira.plugin.system.issuetabpanels:all-tabpanel ]

Piotr Tarnowski updated JSPWIKI-504:
------------------------------------

    Attachment: my-websvn-style.tar.bz2
                websvn2.png
                websvn4.png

I've made new style for patched-by-myself WebSvn (not published yet). Certainly I will made similar style for JspWiki (to have common look for both tools). The idea is to have compact style (most screen space is used by content not decoration) which gives page look of standard system level application. I will create this style for current stable but of course I can issue it for 3.0 as well.

Attached are screen dumps for WebSvn (just to got a feeling), "Current Path" will probably become "Your trail" and leftMenu will be added.

And my three cents to discussion about how define CSS. For me it is much easier to have single style for each logical element rather then heavy rely on cascading. You can always define two styles together
{code}
H1, H2 {font-weight: bold;}
{code}

If I were to find the time to do this where would I find the baseline files?
Just what's currently in the 3.0 CVS? Or should I start with a different
snapshot?

Dirk Frederickx commented on JSPWIKI-504:

The WordPress templates could be used as *inspiration* and help decide which direction we want to go with the look.

There are many examples out there.
EG: (and more)
http://www.styleshout.com/free-templates.php
http://www.freecsstemplates.org/css-templates/
http://www.skinpress.com/

What I really would like is to have a better documentation how to write new skins. So far, not much contributions have been done on that level.

BTW, what about the logo ?

I like your thinking, Goran. Can you propose a patch? (And you could fix it piece-wise, if you don't have time to do everything at once.)

There are quite a few other environments than Wordpress (whose skins, if I remember correctly, are pretty hackish). But there are some others, who might be better suited.

I think the best way would be to just borrow as much as possible from a known system, like Wordpress or Joomla or whatever. This needs to be optimized for developer/tweaker comfort.
