How to add new portlets at runtime in Jetspeed 2

Can anyone point me to some documentation or tutorials on how to add new
portlets at runtime in Jetspeed 2?  (I'm using Jetspeed 2.1.2)  We need
this for a project we're working on.

I've seen some obscure references to the Jetspeed customizer
(org.apache.jetspeed.modules.actions.portlets.CustomizeSetAction) but
was looking for some examples of how to use it -- or whatever is the
preferred way to do this.
