xerces 1.1.0 and schemas

Can someone tell me how to invoke one of the xerces applications
(e.g. DOMCount) so that it will recognize a schema in the xml file.
I tried running it on the personal-schema.xml file in the xerces\data
directory and it got tons of errors which indicated that it didn't 
read the schema at all. TIA.
