new user needs help

I'm trying to get started with jetspeed and need to properly configure james
on a W2K pro machine. I have created entries in both the TurbineResources
and JetSpeedResources files but the mail never shows up... I looked in
/var/mail/spam, nothing. What are MX records and how can I configure my DNS
(my machine is part of a network) to allow localhost to be recognized as a
mail server? I'm not even sure if that's the right question. Can I use a
network SMTP server and how do I configure that?
