I am able to create external table in hive where table already exists in hbase, but unable to create hive managed table for hbase with hive version 1.2.0, hbase version 1.1.1 and hadoop version 2.7.0. I am getting the below error 
hive (default)> CREATE TABLE hbase_table_1(key int, value string)
              > STORED BY 'org.apache.hadoop.hive.hbase.HBaseStorageHandler'
              > WITH SERDEPROPERTIES ("hbase.columns.mapping" = ":key,cf1:val")
              > TBLPROPERTIES ("hbase.table.name" = "xyz");
FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.DDLTask. org.apache.hadoop.hbase.HTableDescriptor.addFamily(Lorg/apache/hadoop/hbase/HColumnDescriptor;)V
