Which version of Xalan are you using? When I try to specify an unknown
encoding, I get a warning message indicating that the encoding is not
supported, and UTF-8 is being used instead. I don't see an exception being
thrown.
Do you have a complete, stand-alone test case that demonstrates this problem -
i.e., either a stylesheet that can be used to demonstrate the problem with the
org.apache.xalan.xslt.Process command or a stylesheet and small Java driver
program?
