Modifing a single file

I want to modify a single file in the repository.

Scenario:

I am a build manager.

I have a trunk and two branches.

Users make modifications on the first branch.

I want to merge the modification from that branch to the second branch.

In order to merge a file you need a working copy. Since the target is the second branch I need a working copy of the second branch. But I don't want to get the entire directory in order to merge a single file.

So is it possible to create a working directory that maps to a directory in repository without getting the files in it?

I can use then cat to get the file into directory, modify it then commit it.

It seams that update on a file get the whole directory again.

Or maybe there is another way I cant' see.
