[VOTE] Alex Harui for PMC Chair of Apache Flex

As you've read [1], we're starting to prepare for graduation. One of the steps is for this community to choose a Apache PMC Chair for Apache Flex [2]. Given Alex's wealth of experience with Flex and all the hard work he's already put into this poddling, I'd like to recommend we appoint Alex as our chair [3]. I believe that our PPMC, i.e. our mentors, have the final say on who gets appointed as chair, so I'm not sure this vote is official but I'd like to record the community's choice with a VOTE.

Non committers can always express their opinion/vote - it's just not biding. It's useful in that it can show if the PMC is out of touch with the other users/contributors.

I personally would have preferred a discussion that allows other
candidates to step in, but I agree that Alex should be a great first

Subject: [VOTE] Alex Harui for PMC Chair of Apache Flex

As you've read [1], we're starting to prepare for graduation. One of the
steps is for this community to choose a Apache PMC Chair for Apache Flex
[2]. Given Alex's wealth of experience with Flex and all the hard work he's
already put into this poddling, I'd like to recommend we appoint Alex as our
chair [3]. I believe that our PPMC, i.e. our mentors, have the final say on
who gets appointed as chair, so I'm not sure this vote is official but I'd
like to record the community's choice with a VOTE.

If need be I'd step forward but Alex certainly has more time than me to put towards the project and thus would do a better job IMO.

I sure there's a few other people who could also take on the role.

Thanks,
Justin

I don't know, first that comes to mind is Justin McLean but I can't speak
for him.

It was just a question on my part. I missed any comments about this concern
from Alex if there have been some already.

Absolutely, such things happen.

Wouldn't it be the same if one of a non Adobe Chair stepped down? We
would have to solicit another competent leader.

Alex responded to this question and said he couldn't guarantee but
that is life.

Also, for the time being who else has the capacity to fill this role
for graduation?

For sure, I will try to remain involved in Apache Flex forever, but there is
no way I can guarantee that, especially if Adobe were to remove me from
full-time participation in Apache Flex. I have two small kids at home
including one with special needs so I have limited spare time.

I'm pretty sure I'm on Apache Flex for at least another year. We've passed
the anniversary of last year's restructuring last week and management all
the way up to SVP say nothing is changing for me. If this project has good
momentum, I doubt I will be re-assigned at the end of next year.

If at some point I am unable to serve as PMC Chair I will start a search for
a replacement (and of course, if I am not doing a good job, you will
probably find a replacement for me).

But the key for me is this coming year. We've been doing donations and just
getting back to parity. With Falcon and soon, FalconJS, I feel like we have
almost cut all of our ties to Adobe and the future is entirely in our hands.
I need to show my management stack that Apache Flex is thriving, and is
staying or becoming essential to many customers that Adobe touches, and that
I'm a key player in all of that. That's how I get to keep my job.

Hi,

I believe Alex is committed to the project even if that happens - but he can answer that himself. Worse case we vote someone else in - which IMO is not a big deal.

What I was trying to say was that in that case, given his dedication to
Flex in the past, he would continue to work on the project in his own time,
like the rest of us who don't get paid. Or he might leave, in which case
we'd select a new chair.

No it's not the same as the rest of us, his job at Adobe is to spend time
on this project, and I'm sure other things. So what happens when they
remove him from said role.

I don't have any issues at all with Alex or him in this position, but
before I throw in my +1 I have a question: what happens when Adobe decides
they don't want any Adobe resources working on Apache Flex?
