.jtl files are log files generated by jmeter through their listeners,
the lightest one is the "simple data writer", so  you need a listener to
open a .jtl file. If you look in GUI mode all the listeners have a
browse button where you can select an jtl file, that file is loaded and
the info it contains is passed to the listener that display the results
in the proper way.
