absolutely beginner!

Hi List,
I intend to develop a small simple Web service in Java for a course and
really want to learn about it by doing. But  I am confused about the stuff  that
I read.
My question is:
Do  I need the technology of AXIS or J2EE for developing?
or both of them?
I will be very glad to get the answer...
