Torque.init() taking forever to initialise - why?

Hi all,

I have a java project that is using torque. The first step of the simple 
command line app I am writing calls Torque.init(). This initialisation 
takes something in excess of 5 minutes to complete, at which point 
execution proceeds normally, and everything works fine.

Can anyone possibly suggest a reason for this enormous delay, and if 
there is anything that can be done about it?

I am trying to connect to the postgresql v7.3.2 database.
