Java Runtime Environment

I am a very long time user of Open Office and have never experienced any problems in the past.I recently installed version 3.4.1.
I am non technical . I have looked at the “ bug issues” and notice that a Michael Williams has reported exactly my problem yesterday. I am at a loss as to what I can do to correct the problem. I don’t even know what Java Runtime Environment is.
Is there a patch or fix that I can download and install? Can I go back to the previous version which worked perfectly well on both my PCs?

Similar to mailing lists, Java is a blessing for developers while being
a pain in the ass for end users.
This is why I use to recommend to turn off any use of Java for the whole
office suite unless you are very sure that you need it.
If you really need Java then you should install the latest version of
the old Java 6 trunk (Java 7 might work in most cases though).
Under Windows this needs to be the 32-bit version even on a 64-bit
system. Under WIndows there is another Java problem which requires
installation of some Microsoft patch as described in
https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=121250
Under Linux there is a performance problem when you run Java databases
with Java 7.

Good night fellows,
A.S.

As "just" a user, I know nothing about Java other than that I often seem to
have problems with it. I've learned not to update it unless my current
system doesn't work with the version I have.

My previous employer always kept a working version on disk. Sometimes our
computers automatically updated Java to a newer version, only to result in
problems. At those times, out IT folks would come around with their disk and
reinstall the older version.

Not long ago, I upgraded to Java 7, but I started experiencing some
problems. I don't recall what the problems were, nor could I state for
certain that Java was my problem. But, I deleted it and reinstalled Java 6,
and all worked well.

Andreas et al,
Sun Bug ID #7024514 is similar, submitted on March 4, 2011 with a
priority of 4-Low when I last printed it on March 6, 2012. The only
workaround on it was to use JRE 6u22. http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/

Note that I am using Slackware Linux 12.2 (K2.6.27), LibreOffice 3.5.7
with JRE 6u33, mysql 5.0.67 and mysql-connector-java 5.0.7 and Base runs
at a reasonable speed - even Oracle Report Builder 1.2.1 runs much
better than in LO 3.5.3, although it still bogs down on larger database
tables (>4000 records and growing, > 500 pages of report), but that may
be expected.

Could you please point me to bug reports at bugs.sun.com or OpenJDK ?

I have seen reports about AOO "not finding" the JRE but never about Java
code in AOO that works in Java6 but not in Java 7. If so, this is an
important compatibility regression that I´m not sure the JDK / OpenJDK guys
are aware of.

Reportedly, the language tool extension does not work with Java 7.
Under Linux all Java databases including the embedded ones do not run
properly with Java 7.
There are dozends of issues with different versions of LibreOffice,
OpenOffice, Java7, Java6, 32 bit, 64 bit, extensions and databases on
various platforms.
For the all current versions of both office suites Java6 seems to be the
best advice. For Windows it needs to be the one for 32-bit platform in
any case, even if Java 7 works for you.

Java 6 is also on the way out. Oracle extended the life of Java 6 for
another half a year due to public pressure. But Java 7 is the current one,
and Java 8 is on the horizon.

So is there any reason for telling users to install Java 6 instead of Java
7?. Java is backwards compatible, and I never had any problem running any
Java based software with the current Java7u9.

If you are really sure that you need to use an Java related feature with
OpenOffice under the Windows operating system then you go to

scroll down to the latest "Java SE 6 Update", click the download button
in the second column (below "JRE"), confirm the license blah and then
you download the full package

> Windows x86 Offline	16.19 MB currently: jre-6u37-windows-i586.exe

You download the latest version of the elderly Java 6 trunk for 32-bit
systems even though you may be tempted to download the latest Java 7 for
"Windows x64" because you want the latest for your a 64-bit system.
OpenOffice itself is 32-bit software and any Java version that needs to
interface with AOO needs to be 32-bit as well. Java 6 is known to be
compatible with all the office features and all the extensions you may
install in addition to the office suite.
Java 6 is still maintained (updated on a regular basis) and there is
nothing wrong installing as many Java versions as needed to run all your
browser plug-ins, applications and office extensions.

1) Install that Java version.
2) In the office suite call Tools>Options>Java
3) Click the option button in front of your new Java 1.6.37 (clicking
the line does not work).
4) Shut down the office (mind any "quick starter" in your task bar).
Restart the office.

All this is far more complicated than necessary and still not documented
properly.
