Draft 2.13.0 announcement text.

(The draft links don't work! Add ".staging" and the material should be
there.)

-------------- DRAFT --------------

We are pleased to announce the release of Apache Jena 2.13.0. This is a
major release with several new features.

* Elephas, a framework for working with RDF on Apache Hadoop
* Fuseki2, with security a new UI for server use and administration
* An OSGi bundle

== Elephas

<text about Elephas>
-- Rob?
(if you are short of time - send me some bullet points of key user
benefits and other notes, or point to earlier text you are happy with
and I'll write some copy)

== Fuseki2

The release of Fuseki2 includes server security and an all new server
admin UI. It is available both as a standalone server, and packaged as
a WAR file.

http://jena.apache.org/documentation/fuseki2/

The security is provided by Apache Shiro. This can be configured to
meet specific deployment needs.

The new UI provides administration of a running server, including
managing datasets. At the moment, it provides the abilities to create
datasets, upload data, query the data and to backup the database on a
live server.

This interface is new and we are seeking contribution and feedback to
help shape it's evolution.

This incorporates component and contributions from YASR
http://yasgui.org/ (with thanks to Laurens Rietveld)

Fuseki v1 continues to be available. To ease transition, the Fuseki v2
standalone server can be run in the same way as Fuseki1 for existing
configurations.

== OSGi bundle

Each Apache Jena release now produces an OSGi bundle.

Thanks to Stian Soiland-Reyes for contributing this and working with
early users.

     <version>2.13.0</version>
   </dependency>

The OSGi artifact is:

   <dependency>
     <groupId>org.apache.jena</groupId>
     <artifactId>apache-jena-osgi</artifactId>
     <type>pom</type>
     <version>2.13.0</version>
   </dependency>

Full details of all maven artifacts, including SDB, are described at:

Yes we could have a generic announcement that just lists the new features
and then feature specific announcements

Text for Elephas:

---

Apache Jena Elephas is a new set of modules which provide the basic
building blocks necessary to write RDF producing and consuming Hadoop 2.x
applications.

It provides a Common library which contains Hadoop Writable
implementations for the basic RDF primitives (Node, Triples and Quads), an
IO library which contains input and output format support for all RDF
serialisations Jena supports and a Map/Reduce library which contains some
basic Mapper and Reducer implementations for manipulating RDF. There is
also a demo application that shows how to use these libraries to compute
some basic statistics across arbitrary RDF data.

These libraries have been under development for some time but not yet
widely deployed in production environments, we would appreciate any
feedback on bugs, missing features and documentation improvements.

That depends on the build system - in Eclipse I think you make
"features" that bundle the bundles (sic).

I don't know enough about this side of OSGi as in Taverna we have
mainly stayed on the Apache Felix way of using it through Maven. To me
it seems to require the classic manual hunting and downloading of
dependencies.

I can buy this argument, I'm just pointing out that it's unusual in
the OSGi world.

We probably might at some point have documentation pointing straight
at the *.jar
as well. Based on user feedback I think we need to see what is the best delivery
mechanism for the bundle (e.g. should it also go into dist/ or some
kind of Eclipse P2 repository?)

I would hope for Jena 3 to perhaps shrink the number of modules or at
least remove any Class.forName() issues. We discussed the possibility
of moving some functionality (e.g. should we still have the duality
of RIOT and the Model.read/write?)

Do we have a branch for Jena 3 so far? Or a wiki page with the plan?
Last threads I think was this:

http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/jena-dev/201501.mbox/%3C54C3E57B.2010106%40apache.org%3E
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/jena-dev/201501.mbox/%3C54C3E5C3.3020109@apache.org%3E

Shall I try to summarize this as a wiki plan, and then you can correct
my  assumptions? :)

We possibly should point to that from
http://jena.apache.org/about_jena/roadmap.html

I would be happy to help out with experimenting with some of the
restructuring - as long as that is not like this month. :-)

There are several options depending on build/dev system - the most
primitive being "Download JAR".

Agreed. More feedback needed - and for that it needs to go out and be
tested (and probably broken by someone, somewhere).

But is it a real problem?

(How are multiple dependent bundles delivered?)

apache-jena-* is the style we have as preferred points of delivery of
major binary artifacts. They are likely going to be small and just
point to the necessary current internal structures.

jena-* are more internal. It allows reorg of the internal structure
without messing users about unnecessarily.

(There are exceptions that pre-dates that intent)

apache-jena-osgi is the point for an OSGi bundle aligned to
apache-jena-libs - it can then point to anywhere else. I think it is
good to have a simple "use this, your common cases then just work" point.

It is a stable external name that indirects to changing internal
structure. If that structure becomes multiple bundles fine - the
external point of indirection stabilises the user experience.

Technical point: I'm not sure of the value in doing that unless ARQ can
evolve independently to other parts of jena. Adding such cross-module
contracts is more work and reduces our flexibility as we do Jena3.

What model do you have for OSGi users getting binaries if not using
<dependency>?

This can be written sometime:

   http://jena.staging.apache.org/download/osgi.html

The OSGi bundle is new in this release and we can expect it to be
refined over time by user feedback. It's quite possible the main
feedback will be something that we haven't discussed at all.

Sorry, I was confused by apache-jena-osgi vs jena-osgi - the original
text was correct in the sense that it was working. :-)

I don't think it is customary to depend on OSGi bundles through
<type>pom</type> - so perhaps better suggest:

<dependency>
  <groupId>org.apache.jena</groupId>
  <artifactId>jena-osgi</artifactId>
  <version>2.13.0</version>
</dependency>

Or where you thinking that apache-jena-osgi pom would allow us later
to have multiple bundles?

It might in the future be that we'll have multiple OSGi bundles if I
manage to make jena-arq etc. OSGi bundles themselves, in which case
the apache-jena-libs pom dependency would work for this as well.

I would still prefer to avoid the pom indirection for jena-osgi, as
OSGi users don't always use Maven and would get a bit confused.

If I do that I get:

---------------------
[ERROR] Failed to execute goal on project TEST: Could not resolve
dependencies for project org.apache.jena:TEST:jar:0.0.0-SNAPSHOT: Could
not find artifact org.apache.jena:apache-jena-osgi:bundle:2.13.0 in
apache.jena.release
(https://repository.apache.org/content/repositories/orgapachejena-1008)
-> [Help 1]
---------------------

Isn't jena-osgi the bundle? It is the jar.

apache-jena-osgi is packaging POM and is an indirection. But I don't
understand OSGi nor this artifacts structure as it has modules and not
dependencies. I've only done the <type>pom</type> thing before.

> I am not so sure about the -libs one as pom either, will have to test.

That worked in previous releases and has not changed.

The core functionality is that it has:

<dependency>
   <groupId>org.apache.jena</groupId>
   <artifactId>jena-tdb</artifactId>
   <version>1.1.2</version>
</dependency>

Should be
  <type>bundle</type>

I am not so sure about the -libs one as pom either, will have to test.
