petstore flowscript session/cookie

Hi,

Can anyone shed light on how/why the petstore (flowscript) sample in 2.1.3
sets a cookie?

My best guess is that this is set 'automatically' because a global variable
is used in the flowscripts?

Is the cookie used to tie a continuation to a particular user?

Is the cookie actually set by the servlet container, and is accessible
elsewhere in flowscripts as a session object?
