Let's backup and beat this horse another way. (oops, don't want the ASPCA on
my hiney...)

I'm calling 'wwwroot' the public_html folder, so in Linux that's /wwwroot.
Below that, I have subfolders 'explorer' and 'nmdav' for the two users,
right or wrong??

Re: [users@httpd] Options?

But why on earth does it try that on me? I don't run a real server, I only
run for learning purposes... Why so often? And doesn't it realize it gets
404 all the time? I know why, it's cause it doesn't seem to send http-host
header wich makes mod_l33t return 404... Also, there is no orginal
request... Only those... And it changes ip all the time... Feels like a very
BAD worm.. Also, why did it suddenly start? I had never seen the options
method even once before, but after 29/Jul/2003:20:17:42 +0200, they came all
the time... From different ips... And there is only one single link to this
comp, it's located at a dead site dedicated to a freeware game from like 97,
DOS game, called Liero... Seems very wierd to me... Now, what is OPTIONS
supposed to do?

My guess is it's nothing to worry about. It is a DAV client (see
http://www.webdav.org/) trying to see what capabilities your server has.
This could happen, for example, if your clients open up an MS word doc and
Word tries to check to see if it can save back to the server again.

Is this something to worry about? Is it a worm? or is it most likely my ISP?
(I looked it up, all of those ip's comes from my ISP.. but it's also very
common in Sweden so it could be users as well)... Also, what does OPTIONS
mean? I looked it up in the HTTP/1.1 rfc but I can't remember right now...
So.. What is it? And what's propfind?

Also, the requests weren't a year ago, my system time was one year wrong
previously...

True for me anyway... Must be cause I'm on windows...
<IfModule mod_userdir.c>
    UserDir "D:/Apache/users/"
</IfModule>

works for me.. I'll try to change to c:\www where I have some files and
report... I can tell you that this currently is working fine for me.. :p

That would go by 700 I think, and I'm glad you made it at last...I think
I'll write that down as well case some of my friends would get problems or
something...

Now, go through your httpd.conf and check if you changed anything, and if
so, maybe change it back...

Good luck with your ISP!

Re: [users@httpd] Public_html brain gas

Posted by Aaron Morris <aa...@mindspring.com>.
drwx-------- is common for home directories. In octal notation, that is
0700. It keeps all other users out of your home directory. You would
probably be better off setting your home directory to 0711. While other
users would be able go into your home directory, they cannot do
directory listing and have to know the exact file or directory name to
find anything (security though obscurity, if you will). In the case of
Apache, it knows exactly what it is looking for.

Also, you said you set the directory to 677, I assume you meant 766, 677
would be very bad :-) . I do not think 766 would work very well, since
directories need the executable bit set to be traversed. I think 766 is
supposed to be 755.

Chased that bugger down and found the 'nmdav' directory was not '766' but
something else: drwx--------. Don't know what that is but I changed it to
677 and got the damned phpinfo.php to run.

Thanks to all for their help. Now, I'll log this on my notes as to setting

lol, I feel somewhat silly as well...

I changed to d:\www2 (which is my secondary www folder) and it worked when I
requested ~fh which is a folder in D:\www2...

I'm now going to shoot my email client, because that is NOT how I had that
list formatted when I sent the mail out...let me try that again

UserDir directive Translated path
UserDir public_html ~bob/public_html/one/two.html
UserDir /usr/web/usr /web/bob/one/two.html
UserDir /home/*/www /home/bob/www/one/two.htm

hopefully that will be more readable

P.S. goodness, I'm feeling rather silly about all this...if I were just

Urk, following up my own post with a correction, how embarrassing. I
finally found the appropriate page in the documentation on Apache's web
site (http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_userdir.html#userdir)

BOTH ways are correct:
UserDir directive Translated path
UserDir public_html~bob/public_html/one/two.html
UserDir /usr/web/usr/web/bob/one/two.html
UserDir /home/*/www/home/bob/www/one/two.htm

That's what I get for posting without reading the _full_ documentation :)

Not true! According to the comment in my httpd.conf (and, in fact, the way
it works), "UserDir: The name of the directory that is appended onto a
user's home directory if a ~user request is received."

In other words, if a users directory is /home/foo, and UserDir is set to
public_html their webpages should be in /home/foo/public_html.

the URL would then be http://yourmachine/~foo

The only thing I can think of would be the UserDir disabled, followed by
enabling it for only two users...it was suggested earlier in the thread,
but I didn't ever see a response...did you ever try just enabling the
UserDirs (without the disable) and seeing what happened?

Then why do you have the line
Userdir public_html
in your httpd.conf? That should be the full path to the folder where the
username folders are located... I'm taking it again to avoid
missunderstanding...
If the folder nmdav is located at
/wwwroot/nmdav
the line should look like
Userdir /wwwroot/
And like I said.. 777 on .php files and php binary... If it's a filesystem
access error, it's most likely that... :p

You use the line
Userdir public_html right now... Hmm... Set it to the full path to the
folder where you have the two folders nmdav and explorer...
eg.
Userdir /wwwroot/public_html/
or
Userdir /usr/local/apache/public_html/
assuming that the users folders are inside the public_html folder...

Try to set phpinfo.php to 777... It's a script so it might need to be
allowed to be executed... Also do that on your php binary... I had lots of
annoying errors because my script wasn't allowed to be executed... And I
still think it's a config issue... But try 777 on php and phpinfo.php...
Just might work... But for some reason your machine is bitching with you....
You tried to reboot it?

Looks wierd... You have userdir public_html so the linux folder should be
called that as well... Nevermind that! (your last mail)

You could specify a CGI script as the 403 (? did you mean 404 ?)
handler, and the script could supply whatever result code and headers
you want. The script would know the path/filename that generated the
error by looking at one of the passed environment variables (REQUEST_URI
maybe, I forget) and use that to send the proper content.

For example, the 'lurker' mailing list software uses this trick -- you
setup the 404 handler for it's "cache" directory to point to the main
CGI script. Then when a request comes in for content that has not been
generated, the script runs and generates the page, sends it to the
browser, and stores it as a static page so that the next time it's
requested Apache serves it directly & efficiently as a static file...
kind of a neat trick to cacheing dynamic content. I think they have a
cron job to periodicly delete the cache contents to keep disk space
usage down.

[users@httpd] ErrorDocument Gurus... read this

Posted by Jon Block <ht...@collegepublisher.com>.
I'm using the ErrorDocument directive to serve out a different file when
files are not found in one of my directories. Everything is working, but I'm
wondering if there is a way to serve out the error document file without
returning a the 403 status code to the browser. The reason is because I want
to have a certain series of pages be indexed by google and I seriously doubt
that google will take them if they are 403's. The nice thing with these
particular pages is that even if the files are not there when they are
requested, the error document will serve out the content that should have
been there so it is transparent to the end user.

Thanks,
Jon
