[jira] Created: (HADOOP-4929) ClusterStatus should report heap memory used

ClusterStatus should report heap memory used
--------------------------------------------

                 Key: HADOOP-4929
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/HADOOP-4929
             Project: Hadoop Core
          Issue Type: Improvement
          Components: mapred
            Reporter: Amar Kamat
            Priority: Minor

As of today {{ClusterStatus}} reports _total-available-heap-memory_ and _max-heap-memory_. I think it will be useful to show the _actual_ heap memory used i.e {{total - free}}. Note that this was introduced by HADOOP-4435.

[jira] Commented: (HADOOP-4929) ClusterStatus should report heap memory used

dhruba borthakur commented on HADOOP-4929:
------------------------------------------

The current code displays used_memory = Runtime.getRuntime().totalMemory() which is the amount of memory currently allocated to the process heap. I have seen that when this value reaches close to the max-heap-memory, a garbage collection is triggered.

What does Runtime.getRuntime().freeMemory() actually represent?
