How to pass errors occurred in an EJB call to the presentation tier

How do you guys pass error information to the presentation tier when an EJB
call within an action results in an error (either a nonfatal error in the
form of a statuscode, or a fatal error in the form of an exception) ?

I find the mechanism for sendin form validation errors to the presentation
tier extremely usefull, i was wondering if there is anything similar for
errors that occur wihtin an action ?
