Default number of results to show on a page should be configurable, at least for signed-in users
On other similar-ish sites, eg StackOverflow, the default number of items shown is low as with PonyMail. However, it's possible to increase that number if you'd rather a single long list (slower to load) rather than paging through lots
For signed in users at least, it should be possible in your preferences to pick a higher number of messages per page

Setting auto-scale gets me only 5 items on the page, which I consider worse! While the mouse scroll could be nice for some things, for other use-cases I'd much rather have eg 50 displayed that I can quickly cast an eye over, instead of constantly scrolling forward and backward through a very short list

you can set it to auto-scale to your screen height in your preferences, and use the mouse scroll wheel to go to next/previous page. FWIW :)
