If you look in config.xml you will see instructions telling you to comment
out the sections that use file: protocol, and instructing you to use the db:
protocol. You'll need a good Oracle JDBC driver, too.

sqlResources.xml already has the necessary statements for Oracle's database,
so the rest should be automatic.

Basically:

 1) Have your DBA creat a database that you can use,
    and a user with permissions to operate within
    that database.

 2) Change config.xml to use the db: protocol. You'll
    need to modify the configuration data with the db
    name, user and password provided by your DBA.

 3) Make sure that you have the correct JDBC driver.

JAMES will create and manage its own tables. However, it doesn't migrate
existing file based repositories. If someone wants a bit of a project, that
might be one worth doing.

Yes I put that in once I'd worked it out, so to speak.

correct, but $PHOENIX_HOME may change to $JAMES_HOME soon, so that we can 1/
keep this phoenix just for James and 2/ have a better james startup/shutdown
script for use from anywhere not just within $PHOENIX_HOME/bin

That is accurate for the current Phoenix? OK. Quick clarification, though.
The config file says: ~james/lib/. Is ~james the root directory for the
entire structure, including where our copy of Phoenix is located, as opposed
to the james directory under apps? So you're talking about the directory
otherwise known as $PHOENIX_HOME/lib, as in:

JVM_OPTS="-Djava.ext.dirs=$PHOENIX_HOME/lib"

Correct?

No.
Read the comments in config.xml, put it in james/lib.

The driver is not available in your classpath, which is controlled by
Phoenix. You can put it into the SAR file in the same location as the mysql
driver.

>From searching the archives
(http://www.mail-archive.com/james-user@jakarta.apache.org) it appears that
the JDBC-ODBC bridge driver is not necessarily going to work. People have
had problems with it, and I didn't spot anyone having success (not that I
spent too much time looking).

People have had success with Oracle and a real JDBC driver, with MySQL, and
with Hypersonic SQL. I'm assuming that someone has had some success with
each of:

    <dbMatcher db="mssql" databaseProductName="microsoft sql server"/>
    <dbMatcher db="oracle" databaseProductName="oracle.*"/>
    <dbMatcher db="mysql" databaseProductName="my.*"/>
    <dbMatcher db="postgresql" databaseProductName="postgres.*"/>
    <dbMatcher db="sapdb" databaseProductName="sap.*"/>
    <dbMatcher db="hypersonic" databaseProductName="HypersonicSQL"/>

but I can't tell you which drivers worked. You can search the mail archives
to see what people have said, or you can tell people which database you are
using, and see which (if any) drivers people have had success using.

this is a bad idea for so many reasons.. but importantly its not production
quality code, it isn't thread-safe
